Donald MacDonald (British officer)

Donald McDonald (1696-1788) was a British military officer who served in the American Revolutionary War.

Biography

Donald McDonald was a Scottish soldier, sent to North America to rally loyalists in the south against the Continental Army, though eighty years-old. He organized Scottish settlers in North Carolina against the revolutionaries, gaining officers by the minute. However, his army was defeated at the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge. This brought an end to the southern settlers' resistance against the colonist rebellion. Macdonald was captured, and his wife Flora MacDonald returned to Scotland in 1779.
